Exemestane falls under the category of oral steroidal aromatizing inhibitors that is mainly used for the purpose of treating hormonally responsive breast cancer present in post-menopausal females. The key aim of hormone receptor optimistic patients to avert the relapse of cancer is to reduce their estrogen rate through which the cancer succeeds on.
The key source of estrogen in premenopausal females is their ovaries. As far as the post-menopausal females are concerned, their body’s estrogen is consequential with the adrenal gland with the help of the transformation of androgens into estrogens and the aromatase agents assists it in its transformation process.
This steroid is an irreparable aromatase in-activator and its primary purpose is to combine their correspondingly designed aromatase enzymes that avoids the transformation of androgens into estrogens.
Aromasin is the brand name under which Exemestane is sold under. It is the predeceasing treatment of postmenopausal females who are experiencing initial breast cancer and have been treated with tamoxifen for 2 to 3 years. After the treatment with tamoxifen they are converted to Exemestane therapy in order to complete the five year hormonal therapy.
Exemestane is mainly used in order to treat postmenopausal females suffering from advanced breast cancer and whose situation got worse after getting a complete tamoxifen therapy.
Dose Information
Females who are suffering from early or advanced breast cancer are recommended to take a dose of one 25 milligram tablet that should be once in every day only after any meal.
The dose range for patients taking strong CYP 3A4 inhibitor is 50mg every day.
Side Effects of Exemestane
The side effects of Exemestane are not severe but there are some side effects which are minor or moderate. In rare cases, serious side effects are also reported but in very rare case.
The common side effects of Exemestane are fatigue, nausea, escalated level in appetite, and excessive sweating. If any of these side effects occur then the individual must immediately seek for medical attention. There are some serious but highly rare side effects that can occur. These side effects includes feet or leg swelling, infection symptoms, fever or dark urine. There are some other side effects also which that can disturb the physical or psychological condition of the patient. Muscle pain, vision problem, mode swings, insomnia and depression are some other side effects.
Exemestane is strictly prohibited to the individuals who are allergic with any drug, steroid or any of its substance. This steroid must not be consumed by any premenopausal females and must not be used simultaneously with any other steroid or medicine that contains estrogen in it as it might inhibit the actions of Exemestane.
Before using Exemestane, complete medical history of the individual must be disclosed to the doctor. All the past and present diseases or allergies must be shared. As Exemestane is consumed by postmenopausal females, pregnant females have not reported any of the side effects about this steroid. But before taking this steroid, pregnant females should consult a doctor. It is unclear that whether Exemestane is mixed with the breast milk or not, therefore the use of this drug by breast feeding females is highly prohibited due to some risks and other effects.
